PRISMS was developed to support non-specialist doctors like midwives and nurses with clinical decision support for sick and at-risk newborns. The technology generated management plans similar to those of a specialist pediatrician for same neonatal case.
The technology was designed to provide a framework for newborn clinical examination. It was developed to utilise study findings to provide instant newborn care plans using proprietary algorithms; automatically sync clinical examination data to a central server for disease purposes of data aggregation, surveillance and management planning.
In 2016, the technology was tested in the field during a pilot with great reception from midwives.
The midwives from Bwizibwera Health Centre IV used the technology to manage sick babies, even without referrals. After a number of studies, the technology has been adopted in different facilities countrywide.
PRISMS has been shown to reduce in-facility neonatal mortality. This year the technology was presented in Tanzania and Burundi, and it got a good reception. PRISMS is an example of how ICT can change the face of health in any country.
